All About Oil Cleansing
When it comes to skincare, one is willing to go out on a limb to have a flawless, peaches-and-cream complexion. As you go through various stages in your life, it gets tougher and tougher to maintain that impeccable skin, especially as hormones take over.Blackheads, pimples, and whiteheads are all part and parcel of one’s growing-up years and sometimes go on well past these years into adulthood as well. More often than not, terrible lifestyle, junk food consumption, and improper skincare routines add to the stress on your skin and make it harder for your skin to breathe easy. When we look at skincare brands, most of them focus on how to make your skin more beautiful, but often we have no clue how they are planning to achieve that end. Oil is always seen as evil, the culprit that causes acne and the like. So every product focuses on ridding your skin of excess oil. Now, the question is, is that required? Experts now suggest that a simple ritual of oil cleansing might be the answer to a perfect, dew-kissed skin.
Why beauty products aggravate things?
Something as simple as oil cleansing that gives you a blemish-free complexion in just a couple of weeks makes one wonder why we are so reliant on expensive beauty and skincare products to do the same. The problem with most skincare products is that they are created in a manner that strips the skin of natural oils and there lies the root of the problem. In addition, since they are highly fragrant, they contain chemicals which are terrible for our skin and are not recommended, especially if one is looking to get rid of pimples and other problems.
What is oil cleansing?
Oil cleansing is a process of cleaning the skin and nourishing it through the use of a combination of oils that work well to keep the skin supple and glowing. While it may appear to be counterproductive, it is highly beneficial if done in the right manner. It works on the principle that oil dissolves oil; so when you use a method like oil cleansing you are allowing the dirt wedged in your skin to be dislodged and come to the fore before being washed away.
What oil works best?
It is best to use at least two oils as they are more effective together. Castor oil is highly beneficial as it has anti-inflammatory properties and works well to heal and moisturise the skin. Interestingly, if you use too much of it, your skin tends to become dry; so it is essential to do some mixing and matching here. You can dilute castor oil with olive oil which is the favoured choice or even sunflower seed oil if that is more readily available. When combined in the right proportion and massaged into the skin, they dislodge dirt from the pores, making it easier to cleanse the skin. You can also choose from a range of extra-virgin, cold-pressed, organic oils to balance the thickness and properties of castor oil and also nourish your skin in the way that works best for it.
How to do it right?
You may be apprehensive about oil cleansing if you are trying it for the first time, and you may have to go back and forth with proportions till you hit upon the right formula and combination for your skin. Use approximately ¾ olive or sunflower oil to ¼ castor oil to get the desired consistency. Also, if you have oily skin, then vary the proportions by using more olive oil and less castor oil. If it is a combination skin type you are grappling with, further reduce the castor oil content and use a less dense oil for the cleansing. Begin by mixing small batches and work your way up to a formula that aces it for your skin.
